For about two year now, I’ve really wanted fog lights on one of my cars, either the grand prix or the pt cruiser. I just thought they were cool
and useful, at the same time. Money priorities
, and other things, kept getting in the way so I’ve been pushing off this project for a long time. Plus, I didn’t want to get into a project that would be overwhelming. Last Saturday, at the junkyard, I pulled the trigger for two stock fog lights.
It as a simple swap, since the
fog light comes in the same
housing for the turn signal,
you just
take off the old turn signal and put
in the new one. After that, you need to get a fuse and a relay, and the correct steering
stalk to turn it on. Oddly, when I bought this car, it had the correct stalk, but no fog lights. Opening up the fuse
box, it does not indicate
where the fuse and relay is suppose to go (fyi: look in the manual). So from what I can gather, this car either never had fog lights, and they put in the wrong stalk back when the original owner got into an accident (not original windshield)
; or it had fog lamps, but they put in normal turn signal lights instead
and changed the fuse
box to indicate no fogs.... the former is more like
l
y.
I’m SUPER happy I finally got fog lights on my car. It looks so cool! Plus, I put in the labor myself. It cost my $50 total for this project (housing, fuse, and relay), and about an hour of my time.
Now I just need to clean the passenger’s head light.....

I need to find a list that f all the extras my car doesn't have, and get them. So my car would have all the nice bells and whistles.

I did this a few weeks ago as well! :)

That’s pretty epic! Further down the road, I’d like to put LED bulbs in. Though I found a curious quirk with my setup.
Since I’m using the default fog light switch, the fogs won’t come on while the high beams are on; they turn off. It’s no biggie, but one of my end goals was to have four powerful lights while driving out in the country where I live . Naturally I’d turn them off when another car comes, but I definitely want to see deer and other animals before they see me.
Though, I can always add more lights later on, since it has been quite foggy as of late here, lol.

i’d be inclined to guess the wrong switch was installed at some point.
maybe it was cheaper than the non fog light type or maybe all the dealer had on the day the previous owner was there?

Not a quirk, that is actually a common setup for most cars (fogs will only come on with low beams, but turn off with high beams). My old Subaru was wired like that from the factory! Mine are OEM-style fog lights, but I installed the wiring myself (the non-fog cars didn’t have dormant fog wiring from the factory), so mine can be on all the time whenever I want. :)

Yeah, it's really hard to know for sure; speculation is all I can do, lol. I know the car was in two accidents in 2009, according to the carfax. I can only assume in was installed then.

One reason I wanted additional lights was for night driving in the country (which is always for me). So I may look at getting additional lights to mount to the front, and have them wired to an alternate switch that isn't hindered by the high beams. That's my thought process so far. :)

Cool. I live in a semi-rural area as well, but not ‘middle of nowhere’. Using mine as Driving Lights would be a cool idea, but my intent was primarily to use them as their intended fog use in fog or inclement
weather (we get a LOT of fog in Nova Scotia as I live on the Atlantic Coast, and I often have to drive in bad snowstorms). The lights themselves were not OEM from Hyundai
, but aftermarket replacements for OEM. They came with a non-OEM wiring harness that just gets power from wherever you’d like, so mine are wired straight to the battery for easy of access and removal. :)
